How PIE Helps 1% for the Planet Companies Thrive

PIE can really help current and prospective 1% for the Planet members by offsetting their donation commitment with donations made by PIE as a percentage of expenses. It’s an “Innovation in Philanthropy” according to Kate Willams, CEO of 1% for the Planet and we’re excited to help this movement continue to grow worldwide!

PIE is a passionate member of the 1% for the Planet Movement. We’d like to see many more companies join. But 1% of revenue is a big commitment, especially for low-margin companies. PIE offers a simple, proven, innovative way to use a percentage of your expenses to help you meet your 1% for the Planet pledge!

Sound too good to be true? Here’s a case study from Rumpl, a fellow Oregon-based, purpose-led company. PIE helped to liberate over $42,000 of available capital in just a few hours. Here’s the case study below (or download the PDF here).

How Operating Expenses Can Change Lives

What if your company’s boring operating expenses could create an exciting new future for a person in need. This inspiring true story shows how this happened nearly 20 years ago…and is happening today as well. Enjoy the ride!

I have a story to share!

Over twenty years ago I was riding my tandem bicycle through Kenya on a global expedition for peace called Peace Pedalers.  I met a young man as I began climbing into tea country named Joseph Kamau.

Jamie & Joseph in 2007

I asked Joseph if he wanted to join me on the back of the tandem bike.  As we rode he shared his story while grinding up the steep grades.  He shared how he was forced to drop out of high school to support his family since his father had grown ill.  He was no longer able to work to pay his school fees.

Joseph also shared his dream to become an engineer one day.  He was saddened by his current situation and grim career trajectory.

In case you have not read the “our story” section at the PIE website, Peace Pedalers received financial support from a corporate sponsor called Aceva. But Aceva never actually wrote a check to Peace Pedalers.

Instead, Aceva simply chose Peace Pedalers as their reseller of choice to procure their voice, data, and conferencing services as an innovative way to sponsor the project.  Aceva’s service provider, now Verizon, paid Peace Pedalers every month, month fter month, year after year, as we rode through Asia, Oceania, and now Africa.

As Aceva grew over the years to a large, successful company their support scaled as they scaled (think more phones, more buildings, more internet, more expenses)  This gave Peace Pedalers additional recurring support, which gave us the ability to fund many efficient, high impact projects.  One of those was the Peace Pedalers Scholarship Fund.

Joseph’s dream to become an engineer felt very sincere.  He was not trying to just haggle m for some beer money like other riders.  So I offered to sponsor Joeph’s education as long as he got perfect marks.  He connected me to his headmaster to confirm he was performing well.  Joseph gratefully accepted the challenge, and we paid about $150 a semester for him to finish high school with honors.

Joseph was the only person in his family of 11 kids to finish high school.

We kept in touch over the years with Joseph and supported him on and off to attend college and trades schools as well.

Just last week we received these photos and an update from him.

Joseph in 2023 — now a mechanical engineer!

Joseph realized his dream!  He is now an engineer for Qatar Airlines!  He also found a beautiful wife and has two lovely children.

If Peace Pedalers did not help him finish high school he likely would not have been able to achieve this dream.

And what enabled us to support his education was nothing more than one company’s phone and internet expenses they had to pay anyways to operate the business.  The cost was the same–we essentially just redirected available capital from the reseller channel to fund the dream of a person in need

So yes, expenses can change lives.  This happened 20 years ago.  And it’s happening today with the PIE nonporfit funding model that’s growing!

Check out our impact calculator at our website at https://purposeinexpenses.com/calculator and see how your company’s boring operating expenses like phone, internet, software, energy, payment processing, payroll, cloud, and security expenses can change the world!

Yes, really!

We’ve re-branded to PIE: Purpose In Expenses

We’re officially re-branded from Profit & Purpose to Purpose In Expenses (PIE). We are excited about our new foundation to help transform the global business community’s operating expenses into recurring donations to help solve our most challenging social and environmental issues.

It’s official! Profit & Purpose is now Purpose In Expenses (PIE). We decided to rename the company to focus on our core value proposition and to have a brand that can be more relevant to the purpose-led business space. Just like B-Corps and 1% for the Planet are brands that purpose-led companies use to formalize their deeper commitment to a higher purpose, we envision PIE becoming an essential partner for all purpose-led companies to optimize their expenses to support their deeper purpose.

Most companies don’t realize they are leaving thousands of dollars on the table by not procuring their essential technology expenses through a mission-aligned technology partner who shares their passion for impact. A large and growing number of technology providers are more than happy to allow companies to re-procure their essential services through a partner like us because data shows the end customer is better served, more satisfied, and retention is higher. So we’re on a mission to educate the masses about this opportunity, starting NOW!

We’re excited for the future of this social venture and our new foundation to help transform the global business community’s operating expenses into recurring donations to help solve our most challenging social and environmental issues. We invite you to get to know our team and our value proposition at www.PurposeInExpenses.com

From the Bike to Your Business

Ugandan Guest Rider Innocent on Day 1 of our Ride. Together we founded Good Hope School for AIDS Orphans

Ugandan Guest Rider Innocent on Day 1 of our Ride. Together we founded Good Hope School for AIDS Orphans

Today is the day. Profit & Purpose is officially open for business. Blog post number one.

I had a potential client ask me recently “How did you come up with this idea? It’s brilliant!”.  He was shocked to hear it was actually inspired by a bicycle trip. Well, not just any bicycle trip. I went on to explain that I rode this tandem bicycle around the world while leaving the rear seat open to invite strangers to join the journey called Peace Pedalers. I was able to find 40 corporate sponsors to donate just about all the gear that was needed. But one corporate sponsor didn’t have any gear or cash to donate – a startup called Aceva Technologies.

Instead of parting with cash, Aceva signed over all their essential technology and communications services over to Peace Pedalers. Now, every time an employee of Aceva made a phone call, sent an email or did a video conference it was supporting this altruistic intercultural cycling expedition. We sent the team updates and they were ecstatic to support the project. As this startup grew and mature over the years, Peace Pedalers was able to use this regular funding to create 11 charity projects in the communities that we rode through. Aceva won, Peace Pedalers won and the communities all won.  And, there were no losers.

Now, many years off the bike, I’m settled into married life and a father of three kids living in Bend, Oregon. As Covid 19 hit hard I was looking for ways to use my experiences in life and business to be of service. Out on a mountain bike ride one morning I was inspired to bring this model to the businesses in Bend and beyond. I thought to myself, what if we I could help businesses to reduce expenses, increase profits and support their favorite community nonprofit partners? And what if I could also help them to activate these partnerships to increase productivity, moral and help them earn and retain customers? So, Profit and Purpose was born. And we’re here to be of service to help you Make More, Give More and Grow More. Let us know how we can help!
