Our Story

The Inspiration

It all began with a dream to ride a tandem bicycle around the world with an empty rear seat, inviting total strangers to join the journey to create intercultural friendships on an 81-country expedition called Peace Pedalers. The mission was to reduce unjust fears and prejudices to create more world peace, one rider at a time.

To help make the journey happen, PIE’s Co-Founder Jamie found 40 corporate sponsors to donate equipment and gear. However, not a single sponsor was able to donate cash. How do you run a global expedition with no cash? One potential sponsor Aceva Technologies was unable to donate cash or in-kind product. Instead, they offered Peace Pedalers the opportunity to become their chosen technology reseller to broker many essential services like internet, phones, conferencing, and more. Aceva’s technology provider, now Verizon, compensated Peace Pedalers month after month, year after year as Aceva’s chosen reseller partner. This innovative sponsorship plan provided essential recurring financial support to the project that helped make the entire global odyssey possible.

11 Charity Projects Later…

As Jamie pedaled around the world he used the recurring stream of financial support from Verizon, made possible by Aceva’s essential technology expenses, to ride with over 1,000 people on the tandem to realize the vision of Peace Pedalers. The inspirational stories of intercultural connection were shared with millions of people around the globe.

But beyond just completing the expedition, Peace Pedalers used this consistent funding to help create 11 grassroots impact projects including two schools to educate underserved kids, Malaria disbursement to save lives, bike donations to give the gift of freedom, a scholarship program, and a freshwater system for a community in Bolivia. Aceva did not have to pay more for their services and never once had to write a check! Their support was systematically embedded in their essential fixed expenses. Best of all, Aceva’s team culture thrived watching the stories of impact unfold month by month and the company grew rapidly to a successful exit.

Creating a Movement

Jamie met Cristina in Argentina during the Peace Pedalers ride. She joined on the tandem bike for 16km and never left. A decade later they settled into Bend, Oregon with their three kids Luca, Candela, and Sol. As Covid hit the community of Bend hard in the spring of 2020 Cristina saw the need for a creative way to provide consistent support to worthy causes that is not tied to inevitable fluctuations in business or economic performance. Reflecting back on the thousands of lives impacted by Aceva’s Technologies’ expenses with Peace Pedalers, Cristina and Jamie gave birth to Purpose in Expenses in the spring of 2020 (fka Profit & Purpose).

Purpose In Expenses was tested during the Pandemic via a successful pilot case study from 2020 to 2022. During that time we also built out our provider partnerships with over 1,000 vendors, as well as a vast expert support infrastructure network in every discipline. We’re now scaling this simple yet proven funding model worldwide as a movement to liberate millions of dollars of available capital that’s simply waiting to be unlocked by conscious business leaders to redirect to important nonprofit impact projects. We’re 100% committed to creating $10M in recurring donations by 2030 to help solve our most challenging social and environmental issues. Join us!

If one corporate sponsor’s essential business services can help thousands of people, imagine what we can do if we purpose-power the world’s business services. It’s easy if you try!
